In 1891, Pitt and Sittman of New York created the first slots. These machines were based on poker and had more than 50 card faces.
Charles Fey
Slot machines were first invented in 1895 by German emigrant Charles Fey, born in Vohringen, Bavaria. After traveling to France and England, Fey finally settled in America in 1885.
He was an experienced machinist with a strong foundation in mechanics. As a young man, he worked at the Munich Plow Company, an intercom equipment manufacturer in Amiens, France, and the nautical instruments department of a shipyard in London.
Fey’s travels and skills enabled him to acquire the English language proficiency required for success in America. With few family ties back home, Fey made the decision to emigrate.
His first slot machine, the Liberty Bell, was an instant sensation and quickly became a staple of the industry. It featured three reels with ten symbols and offered a 50 cent jackpot.
Charles Schultze

Gustav Friedrich Wilhelm Schultze invented the first slot machine that paid out cash in 1893. Although this machine, known as The Horseshoe Slot Machine, wasn’t nearly as popular as today’s modern-day slots, they still remain incredibly popular today.
However, it did have one unique feature that set it apart from all other machines: an automated payout system. Winning players could immediately collect their rewards in cash!
Gamblers found it more appealing, offering them the convenience of winning cash without waiting in line at a machine. This marked an improvement over prior machines that required an attendant to distribute prizes.
Charles Fey then revolutionized this slot machine by creating one with a more straightforward design and functionality, as well as the added bonus of real money winnings – this became known as the Liberty Bell.
Herbert Mills
Slot machines were first invented in the early 20th century and quickly spread throughout America, becoming popular at bars, cigar shops, and brothels alike.
Slot machines were initially built upon poker cards and symbols, but soon began incorporating fruits such as lemons and cherries into their reels – giving rise to the term “Fruit Machines.” These mechanical gambling devices became known by their colorful reels.
As anti-gambling laws became stricter, manufacturers found ways to circumvent them. One solution was adding a cylinder music box that would play automatically when change was inserted into the machine.
Herbert Mills was a pioneer of slot machines and produced the Operator Bell in 1907. This game paid homage to the Liberty Bell with fruit symbols on its reels as well as including bar symbols – an innovation never before seen on a slot machine!
